Fat bikes are extremely popular, especially among young people. Fat bikes are electric bicycles with oversized tires. Unfortunately they can also be a danger on the road. Enhancing the bicycles makes it possible to cycle faster than 25km/ph, and a helmet is not mandatory in the Netherlands. This can cause an increase in serious traffic accidents.

Dynostar is a Dutch company that specializes in the development and production of a range of innovative and approved power dynamometers. A dynamometer is a device on which a vehicle while stationary rotates its wheels on rollers instead of while moving on the road. This device is used by the police to determine the maximum speed that a vehicle can reach. Dynostar has been supplying roller test benches to the Dutch police for about 20 years. Now they have developed a new roller bench on which the speed of e-bikes and speed pedelecs can also be measured, in addition to that of mopeds and scooters.

These new devices were recently put into use by the Dutch police. They are very satisfied with the operation and all police units in the Netherlands now have a Dynostar roller bench. News spreads fast as this development reached international and intercontinental interest!

How Zemic Europe advised Dynostar:

Dynostar and Zemic Europe work closely to address the challenges of measuring within dynamometers for modern vehicle testing. By combining their expertise, they develop solutions that provide precise speed measurements and are made to the needs of law enforcement agencies and other clients.

Dynostar explained the exact needs regarding the weighing function of the dynamometer. Zemic supplied a sensor with a specific cable length, which met the customer’s specifications.

To measure the speed accurately, someone must be sitting on the bicycle. The pressure exerted influences the speed to be measured. This can be measured very accurately with Zemic load cells.

Which Zemic load cell is most suitable?

Our S-type load cell H3 was the most suitable for this application. Dynostar preferred a shorter cable, so we developed a custom version of the H3. This load cell is integrated into Dynostar's dynamometer. The shortened cable improved the ease of installation on the Dynamometer.

This load cell has the following characteristics:

• Nickel plated alloy steel IP67 “S” type load cell
• Tension and compression applications
• Suitable for hanging, hopper and other weighing devices
• Also available in imperial capacities and dimensions
• The capacities 100kg – 2,5t have an OIML approval
